History

A 60s pop group that played under the name of Jerome.

The origins of the tracks on this CD are essentially, the product of four members of a
60s pop group. The originator of that group was a young teenager, John Waugh
(the first member of today’s quartet) with his first recruit Billy Hogg they, together
with the other vocalist and musicians in the group, linked up with the manager by the
name of Brian Sandells. Together they progressively improved and extended their
repertoire and performances throughout the north-east.
As the 60s music scene evolved and the young musician
s developed their musical abilities.

Inevitably, Jerome had a turnover in group members with over half being
replaced, with one of the new members being Derek Atkinson (the second member
of today’s quartet) joining up with John Waugh and the rest of the group to perform
around the north-east until the mid-60s.
At that point John Waugh left Jerome, to form and play in a group called
“The clockwork Orange” together with Billy Hogg. It was then that Jim Turnbull (third
member of today’s quartet) joined Jerome and performed alongside Derek Atkinson
until the group eventually disbanded in the late 60s.
Jim Turnbull went on to become a professional solo vocalist for most of his working
life, Derek Atkinson continued to play semi-professionally, latterly performing in a
Hollies tribute group. John Waugh joined by Billy Hogg formed and played in four
groups that performed successfully as “the clockwork Orange”until the end of the 60s
and then he went into business. Billy Hogg went on to become a full-time
professional musician, eventually becoming an accomplished artist being
commissioned and exhibiting at various art galleries.
Most importantly, John commenced highly political NUFC campaigns together with
Malcolm Dix and Alan Rooney, all three playing a major part in the success of the
magpie group which was founded by Sir John Hall.
Derek Atkinson (with his studio recording experience) and as being the initial
catalysts in reuniting with John Waugh was to spark the chemistry of John’s song-
writing ability which has resulted in the recording of this CD. Sadly because of
various circumstances Derek has necessarily had to move on adequately replaced in
the setup by Billy Hogg.

A canny story as they say.
